Eleven teenagers and 10 adults set out across Alaska with seven rafts. Little did they know that sand storms, scorching sun, and raging waves awaited them. In early June Mr. Voley, a teacher at Kenny Lake High School, and his high school documentary class set out to descend the 100-mile float down the Copper River. After packing the rafts full of food, clothes, and camera gear, they set off down the river. After floating for about an hour, extreme winds began to hammer the crew; sand filled the students’ eyes, ears, mouths, and noses. Soon the kids would discover that it was almost impossible, not to mention pointless, to try to stay clean. The team shot some amazing footage while on the river and had the opportunity to create re-enactments for their documentary.. Each night, students spent at least an hour or two playing rugged games of steal the flag. One night the students challenged the adults. All of the guides from BLM, who were from out of state, were very surprised at how well the students entertained themselves by playing different games and creating activities for themselves. The last night of the trip was spent at the Cordova High School. The students played bump (A basketball game) and held a talent show about their experiences from the river. That night was filled with laughter! Waking up in the early morning the group caught the ferry back home. The trip was very successful and ended with smiles and great memories.
